Lafayette Square and Soulard.
Lafayette Square is said to be the largest restored Victorian neighborhood in the United States. A showcase of 19th Century opulence, this enclave of Second Empire townhouses and mansions surrounds elegant Lafayette Park and lies only a short distance south of Union Station (just over the 18th Street bridge and past the AmerenUE building). Your guide, pedalling one to four passengers, will relate the history of the area, pointing out interesting buildings, haunted places, and other items of note as you meander the fascinating streets.
You have the option to wander further into Soulard, an even older neighborhood, named after the man who first began to develop the land--Antoine Soulard, a 1790s refugee from the French Revolution. Explore Soulard's narrow tree-lined streets and variety of architecture styles--from skinny half-houses to a rendition of a German castle to ornate old factory buildings being transformed into lofts. Soulard is home to the long-running Soulard Farmer's Market and, in keeping with her French heritage, the second-largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States.
Available most afternoons and Friday and Saturday evening. Advance appointment is recommended.
